Unkind Words...

Unkind Words...I have noticed that in the "now", I blame the advent of technology, we seem to be able to say things to people that when I was younger would have never been said. I do believe that humans are the same now as they have always been. We have always THOUGHT unkind things we just seemed to NOT voice them as easily in the past.

I work at the local thrifty shop. It is really a fun job as I am a pirate. I dig for treasure amongst all the jewelry that has been bequeath to the shop. I work with customers.

People have said the most offensives things. Granted the environment allows for some misconduct. Yet, I am shocked when people feel free to accuse us of keeping (stealing) the gold for ourselves, mind you these are customers I have seen everyday that I worked for near two years! I have said I am a pirate but theft is not part of my repertoire. I have seen theft and lies and false accusations. At first I assumed it was the ambiance in which I worked. I have come to realize that it is the absolute distraction of technology. We have stopped interacting with people on a daily basis and instead allow ourselves to delve into the square box of a phone. (Americans are obsessed with cell phones!) My Prince Charming rides the train to work and he says you walk onto the platform and everyone has their heads down absorbed into the screens of their phones. He continues to say that once he is sitting down he rarely sees anyone reading or without their black boxes! He says the older generation is more likely to be looking out the window or glancing at a magazine. I think the lack of daily interactions have made the ones we do do (ha ha) less personable and more unkind.

I wonder if we committed to NOT taking our phone into the store every other time or left it in the car altogether when we shop, would we be more interactive? Would we control our communication? Would we reach out to kindness instead of saltiness?

I know this isn't a complete presentation of the thought, but I am running on little sleep. I just thought maybe I could put the beginnings out there and you could run with it?!

Go and do and leave the phone behind.
